Ambohimanga Kings Palace and Digeu Market in Antananarivo

Ambohimanga King’s Palace is located on one of the twelve sacred hills surrounding Antananarivo. Known as the “Blue Hill”, it is the birthplace of the Merina Kingdom and one of Madagascar’s most important historical and spiritual sites.

This sacred royal city is home to ancient royal tombs and traditional places of worship, including the royal pools and sacrificial stones used in ceremonial rituals. In the past, access to the Hill of Ambohimanga was strictly forbidden to foreigners and even to pigs, reflecting its deep spiritual significance.

At the summit stands the Rova , the Royal Palace of Ambohimanga , a fortified enclosure that includes the traditional wooden residence where the king once lived.

No visit to Antananarivo is complete without a stop at the lively Digue Market, the perfect place to shop for local handicrafts and authentic souvenirs before returning home.

In September and October, at the beginning of the rainy season, visitors may have the chance to spot baby lemurs. Typically, lemurs give birth to a single offspring after a gestation period of approximately 120 days.
